Beginning the Slow Work

A note on what comes next.

If you're reading this, you've either followed me here from one of my previous projects or you wandered in from somewhere else. Either way, hello! I'm glad you're here.

A particular hello to past subscribers of my FRGMNTS newsletter. 👋 You've been with me through 65+ issues of poetry, questions, and some vulnerable parts of my "origin story." And you're now part of this new space automatically, as a Reader. You don't have to do anything. You're already in. You've been here since the start, and you're a huge reason I've kept writing. Thank you for following me here.

An official welcome, to my website

This website has been coming together for a while. It's a different kind of space than you're probably used to finding on the internet. Here, things are slower. More subtle. Sacred, at least to me. I built my website to be wandered through, not scrolled past. I think of it as a digital garden (see the about page if you want the longer version of why).

This will be home to my public writing, a small space for my design work, and a members’ area for the slower creative projects that don’t belong on the fast-paced freeways of social media.

But this post isn't just about the website, it's about what comes next for me.

This next stretch will be focused on two things.

1. Writing While Away in the open

I've been carrying the poetry, photographs, and ideas for this book for years. Since December 2020, to be exact. There are half-finished thoughts, drafts in nested folders, and early versions of poems waiting to find their shape. And it's all just sitting there.

I've been afraid of it, mostly. Afraid that finishing it meant I had to get it right, and afraid that getting it right had to happen alone.

I've decided to stop doing it alone.

While Away is going to be written here, in the open, where members can read along as it comes into being. You can expect to see first drafts, out-of-order progress, half-finished pieces, and process notes when I get stuck. Some of it will be rough, but that's the point. It's what most of my writing looks like.

The book is being written in the same spirit this site was built: Creativity is how I heal.

2. Building the archive

Alongside the book, I'm gathering the work I've already made (there's more of it than I sometimes realize). 65+ issues of FRGMNTS. 40+ poems written over the years. Photographs from all over, near and far. ENJYMNTS, my growing private index of inspiration. Most of it has lived scattered across platforms and note-taking apps until now.

This website is where it will all live.

The archive is being loaded in gradually rather than all at once. As pieces appear, Readers will have access to the Special Projects archive: past FRGMNTS issues, poems, and photography.

To FRGMNTS folks specifically: the newsletter isn't going anywhere. While it won't be weekly, I'll eventually bring back the broken bits of poems that we all shared together before. Past issues will live on here as part of the archive, and you'll always get new issues, whether you stay a Reader or become a Member.

What this means for you, practically

  • Readers (which all FRGMNTS subscribers now are) get full access to the Special Projects archive as it comes online: past FRGMNTS issues, poetry, and photography.
  • Members get everything Readers do, plus While Away as it's written, access to ENJYMNTS, and brand new Special Projects work as it arrives. Members will also receive a free signed physical copy of While Away upon release.
  • Everyone can read the public Writing and Design posts, always.

(There's also a "Founding Member" option, but I'll let you explore that on your own.)

If you just want to read along, free is more than enough.

Onward

There's more coming. The first piece of While Away isn't far off.

Whatever brought you here, I hope you'll stay awhile.

I'm really glad you're here.
